Do they make a hard case for the IPAQ HX 2495?

Also does the hard case scratch the screen/body of the device?
Also what is the point of having a case with a gap between the
front and the back?

Well, not sure about the model, but you should search ebay. If they make
it, it will be there.

For one thing, they are lined with foam rubber so it's won't scratch the
screen. Not to mention that the lids are usually bowed out from it. I
always have a hard metal case on mine, make sure when I keep it in my
pocket, it doesn't break.

This is where the PDA goes If it didn't have one it wouldn't be a case :-0
IMHO they're great and wouldn't be without mine, it has 2 sd holders too.

I always thought the case was to protect the device from things such
as water. So if you have a gap between front and back it will offer
no protection from the elements.

OK now I understand a little better. I have a metal case and a otter case.
The metal one is small enough to go in my pocket and protects the unit from
physical damage to the unit (beware the top pocket and picking things up off
the ground) and the otter case for use in the boat which is a waterproof
case but is about the size of a kids shoe box. I needed the larger one for
the extended battery for my hx4700 but there are smaller, neater ones too.
The otter will float and is fluro green in colour (see I'm not a yank) but
would not fit in the pocket of any clothing I have. Using the PDA with the
GPS while in open boats is why I need the large waterproof case (the GPS 10
is weather proof) and because I'm a clumsy bloke is why I have the metal
case. I hope this has shed light on some of your queries
