From: olivier.duhart on 13 Jan 2006 09:14 hello every body, I have an old Toshiba Satellite pro 4340 with a 12 GB hard drive, and I would like to try to replace it with a larger one (let's say at least 40 GB if possible) to be able to have more than one OS one my laptop and to store all my digital photographs without problem. My problem is that I don't find anywhere (userguide, google, newsgroups...) information on : 1) is that possible ? 2) if answer to 1) is yes : how to operate. Does anyone know about Toshiba satellite pro laptop hard drive replacement or at least know how to reach the drive I may try the replacement at my own risks if only I know where to find it ? thanks Olivier
From: dasears@gmail.com on 13 Jan 2006 10:41 There's little reason it couldn't be done, or even that it would be particularly difficult. The hard drive is most likely hidden behind a cover either on the bottom or on a side of the unit, or possibly under the keyboard - Toshiba's done it both ways on various models. If you could post photos, we could probably determine where the hard drive lies. If you need lots of room and aren't obsessed with the idea of performing surgery on your laptop, you might look into external USB hard drives, which can provide lots of cheap storage. You may be interested in item 6825577646 currently available on eBay (no, I have no affiliation with the seller :-) Good luck
From: Barry Watzman on 13 Jan 2006 11:40 Generally it's possible and easy IF you can get to the hard drive. On most laptops, there is a compartment that opens easily with just 1 or 2 screws, you just have to know where it is (model specific, obviously). On a few it's under the keyboard, inside the battery compartment, etc. On a VERY small number, you have to do major disassembly of the entire laptop, down to the motherboard, to change the hard drive. The drives are standardized, although they come in several standard thicknesses. Since you are already past the 8 gigabyte barrier, you can probably take a 40 gig drive with no problems, basically any 40 gig drive that is not "too" thick will work (most likely your laptop's hard drive compartment is either 9.5 or 12.5mm in thickness). Use your ears to find out where in the laptop the hard drive is located, and then your eyes. Or look for a service manual. olivier.duhart(a)gmail.com wrote: > hello every body, > > I have an old Toshiba Satellite pro 4340 with a 12 GB hard drive, and I > would like to > try to replace it with a larger one (let's say at least 40 GB if > possible) to be able to have more > than one OS one my laptop and to store all my digital photographs > without problem. Here are some instructions for the Pro 4200. The 4300 may be similar... http://www.bixnet.com/toshiba2.html#Satellite%20Pro%204200%20Series Jim
