Tried the method in the manual. Does not work!

Manual is wrong - you need to hold in both the buttons on the
left of the unit and press the reset button with the stylus.
Then keep your fingers on those two buttons for a count of
about four or five and the screen will show the "press send
to format" screen. Press the green phone button and all will
be well.

All I got doing that was a graduated three colour screen!

However I was pointed to this. The software version worked.

Still no hardware success though.
