From: carolyn on 8 Oct 2006 07:30 I have just been given a quote for the following system being advertised as Red Hat/Mandrive compatible. Have you had any experience, good or bad, with any of it? Antec Sonata Chassis ASUS P5B-VM Intel G965 chipset Intel Core 2 Duo 6300 (Dual Core 1.83Ghz w/ EMT64 Technology) 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 667 Corsair Liteon DVD-RW Segate 7200.10 NCQ SATA II 250GB BFG 7300GS OC DVI+VGA+HDTV PCI-E 256MB Microsoft Natural 4000 w/ MS Mouse OR AMD 3500+ AM2 processor and NForce board So, any recomendations for me? Thanks, Carolyn -- Carolyn Marenger

I think the Intel solution would also be more expensive, and in that case, I would recommend a dual-core AMD solution. Its technology is superior to Intel's design, and the nForce chipsets are really very good. What is fast or slow depends on more than just the clock frequency. For starters, the synchronization between the CPU('s) and the memory modules has to be right. If it's off, then you've got too much latency. In addition, I am sitting here at a 32-bit two-way hyperthreaded Xeon machine - in other words, I have four logical CPU's - at 2.2 GHz with 4 GB registered ECC DDR RAM and a pair of Ultra 160 SCSI drives, and this thing is slow as Hell in X because of the Radeon card and its crappy driver, despite the homegrown preemptible 2.6.17.13 kernel, which I've optimized for my hardware. AMD's have always been faster than comparable Intels, and AMD is more supportive and sympathetic towards Free & Open Source Software, eventhough Intel does cooperate on the development of the Linux kernel tree just as well as AMD does. But then again, Intel also actively works together with Microsoft and a few other companies - I believe HP is among them - in trying to get TCP/IP replaced with something proprietary, as part of the so-called /Palladium/ technology, which is supposed to make the internet safer (for Windows, no doubt). In addition, I'm inclined to share Patrick's conviction there. Intel is quality, but so is AMD, and they're more affordable. And in addition, they're more sympathetic too, because Intel doesn't shun dirty tactics if push comes to shove. ;-) -- With kind regards, *Aragorn* (registered GNU/Linux user #223157)

There's no probably to it. The E6300 is close to 3 times faster than the single core A64 3500+. Now if the AMD choice had been an X2, I wouldn't have commented. But the difference in the *2* choices she has is so great it shouldn't be overlooked. And I wouldn't care if the put all of asia out of business in this case. BTW, I don't own an Intel CPU. But it's not for political reasons.:-) -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Usenet alt.video.ptv.mythtv My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php HD Tivo S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm |
