From: Charlie3110 on 14 May 2008 15:21 Hi Chuck not making a great deal of progress. Most of what you say goes over my head as a retired silver surfer but I am getting there. I have managed to get the desk top to see one of the laptops and the same laptop can download from the PC but the other two laptops...........one of them I can see on the PC but when I try to access it I am told that I may have have permission to access. This is different from a week ago when I could see and access both ways. I have a laptop with Vista on it that refuses to be seen but can see the PC. I am confused when telling the Norton Firewall trust of the identity of the laptops. Am I telling it the Physical identity or the IP address? the IP address for 2 of the laptops is the same in 192.168.2.3 is this right or shall I use the physical identity in 00-11-50-28-59-B9? As for the browstat status I copy what one of the laptops says below and you can see what I mean. I cannot find what you mean about the net config workstation etc as I can see no reference to it? We'll really need more than that. "browstat status" "ipconfig /all" "net config server" "net config workstation" Each log, from each computer, please. Keep trying. Download browstat.exe. <http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html> http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP 2005-2007 [Windows - Networking] http://networking.nitecruzr.net/
From: Charlie3110 on 15 May 2008 10:08 Hi Chuck Please bear with me as I have no idea what I am doing. I have downloaded Browstat and run it but it just shows the command prompt for a sec and then disappears. I have run it using my workgroup name as suggested but then it tells me browstat is not a recognised command. What do I do with that? Net config server I had more luck with and this is what came up Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\Documents and Settings\RCT>browstat status 'browstat' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Then I put in net config workstation and got Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\Documents and Settings\RCT>net config worksatation The syntax of this command is: NET CONFIG [SERVER | WORKSTATION] C:\Documents and Settings\RCT>net config workstation Computer name \\BRIAN Full Computer name Brian User name RCT Workstation active on NetbiosSmb (000000000000) NetBT_Tcpip_{207CCF0E-FC23-49EA-94AC-825F27039DC1} (0030BDBAB11D) Software version Windows 2002 Workstation domain MSHOME Workstation Domain DNS Name (null) Logon domain BRIAN COM Open Timeout (sec) 0 COM Send Count (byte) 16 COM Send Timeout (msec) 250 The command completed successfully. as you can see I am making progress and if you have the stomach to bear with me then we will get there? thanks so far and I will move on with the browstat when you explain where i am going wrong?
