From: ship on 18 Apr 2008 05:24 O/S: Windows Mobile Pro 6 Hardware: Vodaphone v1615 (= HTC TyTN II) PC: Windows XP Pro (SP2), Office 2003 Hi I have just bought a new mobile phone (details above) Is there any way to get the contacts to show first name first? (it only has the options of "View by Name or view by Company" and "Name" turns out to mean the "Save as" field in Outlook2003 on my PC . I am stunned by how basic the Contacts manager on my phone is. Failing the above, is there any way to update all my conacts on my PC so that their "Save As" values start with First name? (At present, about half do and about half do not - this makes it impossible to know whether to look up a contact by last name or by first name!) Failing all the above - can anyone recommend any vastly superior contacts and calender software for a Windows Mobile Pro 6 device that is able to reliably synch with my Outlook on my PC? From: Sven on 18 Apr 2008 10:23 For future reference, the Tytn II isn't actually a Smartphone (now known as Windows Mobile Standard) it is a PocketPC Phone Edition, technically now a Windows Mobile Professional Device. Biggest difference is you have a touch screen, the smartphones do not. Anyway, Have you tried the search capability in the phone application? Open up the phone, showing the dial pad, and start typing on the keys, the name of the person you are looking for. Don't worry about first/last name. If it is Bob Johnson, you can type B, O, B (numbers 2, 6, 2) and everything that has bob in sequence will be filtered for you. You would also see things that have AMA and COC in them if those exist in your address book as the numbers 262 can also be resolved to those letters. It is surprisingly fast. You could have started entering Johnson, as well, 5,6,4...etc. Once you see and highlight your target, the center action button will open the contact, so you can select other options, other phone, e-mail, etc. , hitting the green phone will dial the number shown. This also works in the contacts application. Open Contacts and pull up the keyboard. Type BOB and all the entries with Bob will be filtered for you. You could type JOH too and you will get the Johnsons and the Johns, and anything that has JOH starting last or first. If you have Johns Hopkins filled as that, you will get it too. So, you really don't need to know if it is filled First Last or Last, First, the search feature will find it for you. Finally you could try SBSHs ContactBreeze, http://www.sbsh.net/product.php?id=14 , which gives you a similar experience, but you might like the layout better and it has some other enhancements. -- Sven MVP Mobile Devices "ship" <shiphen(a)gmail.com> wrote in message news:9ce3db52-132b-4f15-ad96-2fc663e0f9a1(a)26g2000hsk.googlegroups.com... > O/S: Windows Mobile Pro 6 > Hardware: Vodaphone v1615 (= HTC TyTN II) > PC: Windows XP Pro (SP2), Office 2003 > > > Hi > > I have just bought a new mobile phone (details above) > > Is there any way to get the contacts to show first name first? > (it only has the options of "View by Name or view by Company" > and "Name" turns out to mean the "Save as" field in Outlook2003 on my > PC . > > I am stunned by how basic the Contacts manager on my phone is. > > Failing the above, is there any way to update all my conacts on my PC > so that their "Save As" values start with First name? From: Mesquire on 23 Apr 2008 16:01 Yes, there is a way, but you need to edit each entry one at a time and change the "File As" field - this field is available only on WM6. For older versions (which TyTN II isn't) one must perform the edit on Microsoft Outlook on the PC "ship" <shiphen(a)gmail.com> wrote in message news:9ce3db52-132b-4f15-ad96-2fc663e0f9a1(a)26g2000hsk.googlegroups.com... Hi Shiperton, You might want to take a look at http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/raj/FileAs.html to sort all your Contacts in Outlook based on First Name. -- Regards, Raj Pillai Microsoft MVP - Mobile Devices http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/raj "ship" <shiphen(a)gmail.com> wrote in message news:9ce3db52-132b-4f15-ad96-2fc663e0f9a1(a)26g2000hsk.googlegroups.com...
