I have created an background image which has a zigzaging horizontal line
throughout the bottom third. I need to create two seperate images ( the top
2/3 and the bottom 1/3) which will later fit back together like a puzzle in a
flash movie. I know this must be a simple question but I have been trying to
accomplish this for a few hours without success. Any help would be much
appreciated. Thanks.

Are you using Slices? Sounds like you need to learn how to use Slices in Fireworks to split your image up.
