From: vanderen on 20 Sep 2006 03:04 Hi, I am looking for help on setting up a Fujitsu fi-5120c document scanner. I purchased it as an upgrade to a 5110eox2 and have, so far, been disappointed. I liked the ability to put a stack of paper in the 5110eox2 ADF and punch the scan button. It would scan them, descew, and open the file in Adobe Acrobat for verification and naming. It could do this at/near the published pager per minute specifications. The 5120c will scan the pages at/near the published specifications, but the included software makes the actual pages scanned and _saved_ slower than the 5110eox2. I have a year old Compaq Presario with a AMD Athlon 64 3300+, 1gb of ram and Win XP Pro SP2. The hard drive is 250gb, is half full and gets defragged about once a week. The scanner is plugged into a USB 2.0 port with no other USB devices attached. I contacted Fujitsu chat support, we went through the information above. The chat help level I was at seemed to have the same product manual that I have read. So far, I have learned not to use the TWAIN driver as it is incredibly slow compared to the scanners speed. The TWAIN software includes the Fujitsu provided ScandAll 21, the software operation panel, and the Acrobat File/Create pdf/from scanner option. The ISIS driver is much faster, but I am having trouble with the included QuickScan program, including: - does not work with Adobe Acrobat. Not a huge problem if QuickScan worked correctly. - no automatic descewing of pages, leaves a black triangular edge that prints. - QuickScan is very slow or hangs at times, especially when working with 300dpi color files. - Kofax VRS 4.0 is included. When I select the VRS scanner option, QuickScan indicates this is a level 3 scanner and I have a level 1 license. - I can find no link for downloading any patches or updated versions of QuickScan. I looked at getting a SCSI card, but using the ISIS driver, throughput does not seem to be the issue, and I am not sure the SCSI would be faster than the dedicated USB 2 port and computer. I have been spending my Saturdays working on configuring this scanner. Right now, the best option would be to ebay the 5120c and get the newer version, the ScanSnap S500. Thanks, -- Rob

Before you do, take a look at some reviews here: http://www.pcmag.com/category2/0,1874,7497,00.asp I was in the market for a document scanner and eventually bought the Xerox 152 after these reviews. I was up and running in no time. Good Luck!
From: Danny on 22 Sep 2006 12:04 Hello Rob, Wow- I'm impressed with the thourough problem description! Now for some suggestions on getting the most out of your fi-5120C. It's also great to see that you've had the opportunity to experience the ScanSnap series scanners...I personally feel that people who are still used to flatbed scanners or MFP's will be shocked with the performance/price of the scansnaps. As for the fi-5120C: you've taken a big jump from the 250pg/day duty cycle of the ScanSnap to 2,000pg/day duty cycle of the fi-5120C. Other main differences are embossed card scanning, reversable backgrounds for both CCDs, ~17ppm vs. 25+ ppm, and UltraSonic DFD to name a few. Equally important in determining the best product for your needs is software compatibility. The ScanSnap is perfect for those who only scan occationally. However, you're limited to 2 file formats out of box: pdf and jpg for color. The fi-5120C is the better product by far- and I'd be happy to show you the other advantages in a live remote session anytime you'd like on your scanning pc. I don't want to make this thread too long.... but if you're looking for the fi-5120C to function similar to the ScanSnap (from the perspective of the scan operator) then try the following: 1. Uninstall Fujitsu Twain 32 2. Uninstall the ISIS drivers 3. Install the VRS 4.0 software using the CD that was included with the scanner 4. download the VRS 4.1 ftp://ftp.kofax.com/pub/support/ipbu/vrs/4.1/vrs_4_10_main.zip from the Kofax ftp site 5. install the VRS 4.1 directly over the top of VRS 4.0 (VRS 4.1 is required if you're running a microsoft .net framwork 2.0.) The rest isn't very complicated but there's too many steps to list in this email: an outline of the configuration is: using the Scandall21 plugins and after installing Acrobat 7.0 Std, configure the WIA Events for the fi-5120C to use the buttons on the scanner. Make sure Scandall 21 is set to use the VRS twain datasource and set the page size for at least legal size- (VRS will crop and deskew automatically). Setting the Windows Event Scan Button to launch the application Scandall 21 ScantoPDF will enable the user to place documents in the scanner, press the scan button (on the scanner), and then they'll name they'll be prompted to save the pdf files. Give me a call if you'd like a remote session to either cleanup the current installations, and/or install&configure my suggestions. I'm also available to assist on the weekends if you'd prefer: Thank you, Danny Ha 408-996-1829 vanderen(a)bmt.net wrote: > Hi, I am looking for help on setting up a Fujitsu fi-5120c document > scanner. From: Danny on 25 Sep 2006 05:19 I just noticed the processor of your PC is the AMD 64- (64bit architecture). I'm suprised the twain drivers worked at all to be honest... The Fujitsu Twain32 drivers are only 32Bit compliant. Typically, you wouldn't see your source listed at all with a twain compliant application when using the STI twain v9.x. Do you get the same results if you install on another PC (32Bit)? If you see the same results, then we can rule out the 64 Bit environment as being part of the problem. From: CSM1 on 25 Sep 2006 10:12 AMD 64 bit CPU and Windows XP Home or Pro (not 64 bit Windows XP) will run all 32 bit code just fine.
