I purchased a copy of Microsoft Office XP at a garage sale recently. When I
got home I realized that the serial number was not on the package. I
returned to the woman's house and she said that she didn't know what had
happened to it. Is there any way that I can use this copy of Office?

Nope.
Only MS can supply replacement codes, but will require proof of purchase.

You can call Microsoft and see if they can supply you with the missing
information. Out of curiosity, is it a full retail version or does it say
OEM? If it does, you've thrown your money away.

No, you need to return the CD for a refund.
The sale was illegitimate since no license
(Product Key) was provided by the seller.
The CD is worthless without the Product Key.
