Hi.

I have just come by an iPAQ 3630 which has a a very old version of Pocket PC
on it (3.0.9348 Build 9616). I did not get any disks with it and the OS
itself seems a bit "iffy". I would quite like to re-install the OS or even
"upgrade" it to a newer version.

Does anyone know if it is possible to download the original OS (or an
upgrade) from the Microsoft website, or can I get away with using my Dad's
version (4.20.0 build 14053)? Where do I look and what do I look for?

Help! and thanks

Alec

That os kept hundreds of thousands of users happy for two years...
remember also that it has a slower processor and less memory than
anything on sale today, so the os is a better match for the device.

There was a 2002 upgrade, but would recommend staying with whatever is
on it and determining if you like what you see before trying to find the
upgrade which was withdrawn long ago.

Execute a "Hard reset" ...find the small slide "door" on the bottom
which opens to expose a small switch... turn it off for a few seconds,
then back on.

The unit will then be in "factory state" with everthing on it erased
including the registry, so, if you have anything you want to save, don't
do it until you have the contents backed up.

The standard suggestion is to then use it with only the default apps
(word, excel, notes, calc, etc) for two or three weeks to get used to it.

Soft reset the device each time you charge it to keep the system from
bogging down.

Activesync 3.8 (don't get version 4.x) is downloadable and earlier
versions are available but hard to find, but it would be best to install
the version that shipped with the device if you know of anyone with a
similar unit and the activesync disk. Version 3.1 shipped with that device.

Outlook (not Outlook Express) is required to sync and a free copy was
included on the same disk but the activation code is probably long gone.

There are a couple of third party sync options, but would suggest
outlook if at all possible... think that unit shipped with the outlook
version out prior to 2k
