From: Klaus Zeitler on 7 Apr 2008 17:16 Hello, I've recently switched from Suse 9.0 to 10.3. Playing CDs with banshee works fine, but when I try to import CDs with banshee I get the following error: Could not open CD device for reading.: gstcdparanoiasrc.c (240): gst_cd_paranoia_src_open ():/pipeline/cdparanoia:cdda_identity failed When I call cdparanoia directly (cdparanoia -vsQ), cdparanoia shows the Table of Contents of a CD like e.g.: cdparanoia III release 9.8 (March 23, 2001) (C) 2001 Monty <monty(a)xiph.org> and Xiphophorus Report bugs to paranoia(a)xiph.org http://www.xiph.org/paranoia/ Checking /dev/cdrom for cdrom... If banshee's playing the CD when I press the import button, then I see sometimes the same error or banshee stalls. Gnome starts banshee with: banshee /usr/lib/banshee/banshee.exe --play --audio-cd %d (%d is replaced by /dev/sr1) And to my amazement it works when I leave away either "--play" or "--audio-cd". I've now started banshee in an xterm and this shows a lot more: [1006]$ banshee /usr/lib/banshee/banshee.exe --play --audio-cd /dev/sr1 Warning: [4/10/2008 9:29:19 PM] (Cannot connect to NetworkManager) - An availabl e, working network connection will be assumed Debug: [4/10/2008 9:29:19 PM] (Loading audio profiles) - /usr/share/banshee/audi o-profiles Debug: [4/10/2008 9:29:19 PM] (Default player engine) - GStreamer 0.10 Debug: [4/10/2008 9:29:19 PM] (Audio CD Core Initialized) - Setting MusicBrainz proxy to www.musicbrainz.org:80 Debug: [4/10/2008 9:29:20 PM] (Testing device for DAP support) - /org/freedeskto p/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_1fb8a99f_9c22_430d_b1ca_bb4ce28e378d Debug: [4/10/2008 9:29:20 PM] (DAP has not been added) - /org/freedesktop/Hal/de vices/volume_uuid_1fb8a99f_9c22_430d_b1ca_bb4ce28e378d Debug: [4/10/2008 9:29:20 PM] (Testing device for DAP support) - /org/freedeskto p/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_2cf783a8_75c9_46c7_85dc_fa5e721ce86d Debug: [4/10/2008 9:29:20 PM] (DAP has not been added) - /org/freedesktop/Hal/de vices/volume_uuid_2cf783a8_75c9_46c7_85dc_fa5e721ce86d Warning: [4/10/2008 9:29:20 PM] (Power Management Call Failed) - Cannot find GNO ME Power Manager: Name org.gnome.PowerManager has no owner Debug: [4/10/2008 9:29:20 PM] (Enabled multimedia keys support) - Using org.gnom e.SettingsDaemon Setting IO Backend to Banshee.IO.Unix.IOConfig (unix) Could not load: /usr/lib/banshee/banshee.exe (taglib/exe) Debug: [4/10/2008 9:29:33 PM] (Ripping CD and Encoding with Pipeline) - audiocon vert ! flacenc Debug: [4/10/2008 9:29:33 PM] (CD Error-correction enabled) - using full paranoi a mode (255) Warning: [4/10/2008 9:29:33 PM] (Could not unlock CD-ROM drive) - /dev/sr1 Error: [4/10/2008 9:29:33 PM] (Cannot Import CD) - Could not open CD device for reading.: gstcdparanoiasrc.c(240): gst_cd_paranoia_src_open (): /pipeline/cddasr c: cdda_identify failed espresso> Also try updating to 0.13.2. While looking for the version you suggested, I found version 0.98.3 and installed it (with one-click-install for OpenSuse 10.3). My original problem is now gone, but alas there's a new one: Banshee complains now: Could not fetch metadata for CD I see the following output from banshee: [1015]$ banshee-1 --play --audio-cd /dev/sr1 & [1016]$ [Info 00:24:01.614] Querying MusicBrainz for Disc Release (VijY3pl4ElONCJGf.CxQxb0HC0Y-) [Warn 00:24:01.833] Cannot connect to NetworkManager - An available, working network connection will be assumed [Info 00:24:01.976] All services are started 1.625319s [Info 00:24:02.210] Query finished (success: False, 0.599771 seconds) ** (Nereid:21934): DEBUG: bp_cdda: storing device node for fast seeks (/dev/sr1) ** (Nereid:21934): DEBUG: bp_cdda: setting device property on source (/dev/sr1) But the original banshee (which is still there) is able to fetch the metadata. Here I see a lot more output: [1016]$ banshee --play --audio-cd /dev/sr1 & [1] 21960 [1017]$ Warning: [4/12/2008 12:26:50 AM] (Cannot connect to NetworkManager) - An available, working network connection will be assumed Debug: [4/12/2008 12:26:50 AM] (Loading audio profiles) - /usr/share/banshee/audio-profiles Debug: [4/12/2008 12:26:50 AM] (Default player engine) - GStreamer 0.10 Debug: [4/12/2008 12:26:50 AM] (Audio CD Core Initialized) - Setting MusicBrainz proxy to www.musicbrainz.org:80 Debug: [4/12/2008 12:26:50 AM] (Testing device for DAP support) - /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_1fb8a99f_9c22_430d_b1ca_bb4ce28e378d Debug: [4/12/2008 12:26:50 AM] (DAP has not been added) - /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_1fb8a99f_9c22_430d_b1ca_bb4ce28e378d Debug: [4/12/2008 12:26:51 AM] (Testing device for DAP support) - /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_2cf783a8_75c9_46c7_85dc_fa5e721ce86d Debug: [4/12/2008 12:26:51 AM] (DAP has not been added) - /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_2cf783a8_75c9_46c7_85dc_fa5e721ce86d Warning: [4/12/2008 12:26:51 AM] (Power Management Call Failed) - Cannot find GNOME Power Manager: Name org.gnome.PowerManager has no owner Debug: [4/12/2008 12:26:51 AM] (Enabled multimedia keys support) - Using org.gnome.SettingsDaemon So what now? Maybe it would have been better to install 0.13.2 instead of 0.98.3. Klaus
