I've gotten two dvd of FC6 and am having trouble installing more than
just a bare-bones system. One is from the book "Fedora Core 6 Bible" and
the other is from Linux User magazine.

Each DVD has a directory called Fedora/RPMS that has all the software I
need to install. But the install gets to a point that asks for an
Internet connection on eth0 and won't proceed further, nor will it
permit refering to local repositories (i.e. the DVD).
Post install, the Add/Remove Software application won't run without an
internet connection. It simply opens a window having only an "OK" button
and saying that no internet is available. Click the button and the
application dies.

Also, trying to use yum, as the "Fedora Core 6 Bible" indicates doesn't
work. Most of the time it is because a *.xml file can't be found, but
sometimes it can't find the version of the software that is in the
Fedora/RPMS directory.

I did change to the directory and get emacs to install using rpm -i
emacs, but that is all. (vim and kde have unresolved dependencies).

So, how do I get FC6 to install without an internet connection?

Since an internet connection is difficult for you, try to visit the

http://fedoraunity.org/re-spins

site and download a respin DVD that has all of the RPM's fully updated.

If you have enough running to install emacs, you have enough running to
get the rest of the stuff from the DVD. Look at the site

http://www.city-fan.org/tips/YumRepoFromImages

for how to convince YUM to use your DVD as a repository source.

Now, throw away the bibles: they're not helping ;-)

I've done this about 3 weeks ago, from memory, (3 weeks is a long time
for me) it only needs an internet connection if you choose to use
"extras". I think I had to abort my first go at installation because
of that, (my internet connection is on eth1). Deselected using
"extras" and could then choose any programs on the DVD.

That was one problem with the install. Now the Add/Remove Software menu
item won't work because of no Internet and no instructions on how to
direct it to the DVD. Many of the required applications are on an
"extras" disk or on the install CD under Fedora/RPMS. I'm not familiar
with yum and haven't found a manual that explains how to set up
repositories with the available information.

That looks like it has enough info to work. I'll give it a try. Thanks.

The only reason for getting the "Bible" book was to get the bootable DVD
that came with it. That was needed to test equipment and the cost of the
book was cheaper than the labor to download and burn. The book spends a
lot of time on the obvious but misses much for those who want more than
just a toy.
