From: News Groupie on 12 Sep 2005 16:06 My iBook doesn't have a DVD drive but I need to install Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) (which I have on DVD disc). I do have an USB hard drive. How can I install Tiger with only a built-in CD-ROM drive and an external USB hard drive? TIA

Groupie- With what you have to work with, your only recourse appears to be to contact Apple for the CD version of the installation disks. Do you (or a friend) have any other Macs with DVD drives? They don't have to be able to write, just read the DVD, and have a FireWire port. You can boot the iBook in Target Disk mode by holding down the T key while booting. Then connect a FireWire cable between Macs, boot the other Mac using the OS X DVD, and install from there. Fred

You cannot boot OS X from a USB device; installing Tiger from a USB CD or DVD drive will not work. This is one reason to go with FireWire, not USB, when you choose a storage device. -- Art, photography, shareware, polyamory, literature, kink: all at http://www.xeromag.com/franklin.html
