When I did repaired permissions the correct way, I got (among the usual
other stuff) the response below:

User differs on ./System/Library/Extensions, should be 0, owner is 501
Group differs on ./System/Library/Extensions, should be 0, group is 20
Owner and group corrected on ./System/Library/Extensions
Permissions corrected on ./System/Library/Extensions

That fixed it. But I haven't seen that stuff for a while. I think I've
been doing it wrong.

Yep. I can't remember why I started selecting the physical disk icon.
