From: evanton on 5 Jan 2006 04:37 Dear All, I am totally new to Director and I would like some advice on whether Director is capable of making an interactive DVD quiz. This would be for non-commercial consumption. I understand a traditional DVD (PAL or NTSC) has IFO and VOB files, but what does a Director MX 2004 produce? Does anyone know of a fully comprehensive article on this subject, or even a book. I have checked the Macromedia site but not really been able to find a comprehensive solution. I don't even know what the native executable format of a Director MX 2004 Dir file is? Thanks again for any pointers and I would be delighted to hear from anyone who has tried to create an interactive DVD quiz. If Director is not the best Adobe/Macromedia package, then what is? Thanks again. Alastair MacFarlane
From: otterman on 5 Jan 2006 05:59 Video content needs to be produced in a application such as avid/final cut. Director will produce an application that simply acts as an visual interface to the DVD material you speak of (TS_video:foldervob files). Director can manipulate DVD material very well such as navigating between chapters, audiochannel, playrates as well as the usual play, pause rewind....etc. Im not savy with how you intend to approach your quiz but I would imagen you need a video chapter per question then a means of giving a multiple choice question and a mechanism of answering. If this is the case, then Director is capable of this. Also checkout the DVD Event Manager.
From: evanton on 5 Jan 2006 06:26 otterman, Thanks for the quick reply. Assuming that I have the all the mp3 files and avi files needed and I create the interactive DVD content moving between chapters in Director, what format of file does Director create to work in a DVD player? Does it keep the raw mp3 and avi filenames or does it convert it to the traditional VOB files? If I was to look at a DVD created through Director, what would I see on the disk? Does Director create all the appropriate files in the Video_TS folder including the startup file? What is this file called? As per your advice I will check out the DVD Event Manager. Thanks again. From: otterman on 5 Jan 2006 06:53 Your quick on the draw, I edited my original post as it occured to me that you may of wanted to use a conventional dvd player. I guess you posted your response before it updated. To answer your question. Director is primarily used to produce cd and dvd-roms. These only function on a computer. So if this is not a limitation for your project, your on to the best application for the job. If it is, look no futher... Your gonna need a video editing program to create your clips and a DVD compiler application to create some clever chaptering. Ohh and Director simply interfaces with audio and video files, it does not compile them.

otterman, Thanks again. Each year I create a program in VB and Flash for my wife at Christmas. This year (this seems a long way away!) I thought that I would do something a bit-different and create an interactive music DVD for a non-pc based DVD player. From your posts, and forgive my Christmas alcoholic excesses, I understand that this cannot be done through Director. Can you or this group recommend any software that can be used to achieve the desired results? Thaks again and sorry to be a nuisance. Alastair |
