I have a similar problem - Windows Update keeps telling me I should install
IE8 and other Security Updates, and appears to install them correctly, but
they aren't really installed and Windows Update just installs them again the
next day with the same result! The Security Update KB979683 has been
installed every night for the past month, for instance.

I tried following your procedure below to install SP2. The installation
stops with the message that I must install SP1 first. But SP1 is already
installed - I see "Version 6.0 (Build 601: Service Pack 1)" when I check my
Windows version. I tried reinstalling SP1, but it simply told me that SP1
was already installed.

Any idea where to go from here? I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on
a PC with dual AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ cores.

To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your specific problem
and computer. State your IE version and full Windows version (e.g., WinXP
SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2; Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) in
your first post. Thank you.
