From: 6tc1 on 21 Feb 2006 13:04 Hi there, I have multiple user profiles/accounts on my mac. In my profile I have my entire music library loaded along with my playlists. ITune's music library is in a private directory that shouldn't be visible/accessible by other users on my system. Is it possible that another user on my system would be able to access my music library from their account? I ask because that seems to be happening right now - from what the other user said it sounds like they are able to get access to them when they click on the top "25 most popular" in the tool bar on the right in the ITunes interface. I'll do a little sleuthing tonight to see if they somehow managed to get the music copied into their personal directories, but is it possible that ITunes allows them to listen to mp3's that are contained in another user's private space? On a related note, if the above isn't possible, can I share the music across user accounts by getting ITunes to put its library in some common directory like under the root of harddrive (same level as "applications", etc)? Thanks, Novice

I believe if you put a playlist in the shared folder, it should work.
From: 6tc1 on 22 Feb 2006 12:12 I checked it out last night and it was a mistake - somehow, the user got a copy of my mp3's in their space (not actually directly accessing the mp3's)... the nice part about finding that out resulted in the system regaining some serious harddrive space. Mystery solved... On a related note, if I wanted to share a subset or all of my mp3's into another user's ITunes - is there a clever way of doing it that doesn't require: 1. I copy paste the mp3's into a shared directory (lengthy process) 2. the user drag's and drops the folder of mp3's into their library in ITunes 3. the user waits for about a 1/2 hour for ITunes to register each of the mp3's and place them in the exact same folder structure as the one they pulled into ITunes. Basically what I'm asking is since there is an export feature - can that be used so that i can just directly copy the mp3's into their ITunes music directory and then import that exported file so that ITunes becomes "aware" of the new mp3's in its folder/directory? This saves it the bother of putting the files in the exact same structure as the structure I had in the other ITunes directory. I found that I could export the playlists and once imported they work the same in their ITunes client. Thanks, Novice

You can share all or part of your library. If it is users on the same machine I don't think you have to do anything else. If your are on a network you have to go to the sharing preference under System Preferences and turn on the iTunes under firewall. We do it all the time with the kids. -- Buzz life is too short to drink bad wine!

Make an alias of that folder. Put the alias back to ~/Music/ and rename it so it is exactly like the folder name. now, put that alias in the other Music folders, too. All iTunes users will see the same lists, and the same library, with all new entries and the same playlists. Be careful; they will also be able to delete and change everything. |
