From: Harry on 8 Feb 2005 18:34 Hi, first time poster here, so if I have got the wrong group can you direct me to a more appropriate ng. So, the wife is off to Japan soon. Unlike pervious posters that I've searched in this group I'm not too worried about her using a mobile over there (at the moment) but wonder if we buy a mobile over there would it work over here? I have seen that they use 3G, and that 3 phones over here work there, so could we buy some of their (japanese) phones and use them here? Any advice would be most appreciated. Also any suggestions on models (phones of course)? Or sites which list the details of their phones? I really need a smartish type of phone, fully working calendar and proper address book, use of word or excel type package would be real good too. The wife just wants a real small non clamshell phone. I had been thinking of getting a sony/ericsson P910i here, but I don't think it's 3G so it wouldn't work whenever we're in Japan. So as I said above any help really appreciated TIA H -- aka h

No. Japan uses a totally different system to here, nothing you buy here will work there and vice versa. You'll have to get a phone there for use there. Ivor

They use a version of CDMA peculiar to Japan. 3G is well established there with lots of attractive phones. However, all are sold only with contract which non-residents cannot get. There's yet no payg 3G and I haven't seen USIM-free secondhand phones on sale. They are also locked. Alec

From what I've seen their phones are just so much better than ours. Really thought/ hoped that we could get our hands on some of their phones. BTW what is USIM? thanks for the replies H -- aka h

Im not 100% sure BUT im pretty sure that Japan 3G networks are different to the ones we use here. So phones from there will not work here! Paulo
