NOT THE GRAY WINDOWS SPEAKER! Do you see the "Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager" Icon in the Control Panel? If you don't, then you don't have a Realtek sound system on your motherboard . The "Audio I/O" tab is the fourth one from the left across the top of the Realtek sound manager panel. If you can't get to it, then we have no where to go - it controls the speaker setup and sound panel I/O. Let me know if you find it, then I can walk you through the setup procedure. > and second I can't even get an audio signal out of the black rear audio > port of the sound card with the simple two speaker set I have. That is what I am trying to get you to do, use the play button at the bottom of the room on the Audio I/O tab so we can see if you have the sound system set up right and the speakers hooked up right. No, I see no red speaker in the task bar other the then grey speaker icon in the system tray. The only icon in the Windows Control Panel for audio is the one that says "Sound and Audio Devices" with the gray speaker. > > The "Audio I/O" tab is the fourth one from the left across the top of the > Realtek sound manager panel. I am the one who built the computer. I am not sure why the folder is empty. I do have a folder above the Sound Manager folder that says Realtek AC97 and that program seems to be the environment manager which has ASUS in the upper left corner of the main player window. It does have the front and rear speaker test which I was looking for but still can't get the rear channels to work. I had forgotten about that little program. I might have to look for the CD that came with the motherboard. This is good, it looks like we are starting to recognize what the problem is. You have not installed the ASUS Realtek audio control program for the on-board sound system. Easy enough to do. I do not know what mobo you have, but on my mobo a P5W DH Deluxe, Asus has on their web site updated drivers for this board. They include drivers for the BIOS, Sound, Lan, RAD, and a few more things. And yes, the mobo came with a CD that had all the necessary drivers and programs on it. Perhaps you overlooked the program for the Realtek audio mixer. Do check ASUS' web site for your mobo, chances are good their are new drivers for the hardware on your mobo making the CD that came with the mobo obsolete. This would explain why things are all screwed up for you. Your audio hardware is running in default mode, and who knows what that is. (I thought I had a phase-inversion subtraction problem with the sound system until I realized that the audio system was running in a 6 speaker system mode and the center channel was subtracting common sound from the left and right channels - I did not have a center channel hooked up to the computer - hence no sound!) The Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager is complicated and hard to understand the first time around. You can poke around and see what works, or post a question and go from their. Good luck William.
