Next: Suse 10.3 Network problem after updating the system
From: teuniz on 22 Jan 2008 09:16 I installed openSUSE 10.3 (new install) and I have a strange problem in KDE (3.5.7). When I go to Personal Settings -> System Administration -> Login Manager, I click on Administrator Mode than the window changes into "Loading" and a little window pops up where I type the root-password. In this window is written: "Please enter the administrator (root) password to continue. command: /opt/kde3/bin/kcmshell kdm --embed 46140806 --lang en_US" After entering the right password, the popupwindow disappears but the window with the settings stays empty, except for the message "Loading..." The same happens with Font Installer and Date & Time. To investigate the problem, I opened a konsole and logged in as root. Then I entered the command: /opt/kde3/bin/kcmshell kdm Then I got the requested window where I could change the admin settings for the login manager. So, in the konsole it works OK, but not in Personal Settings -> System Administration -> Login Manager. Does somebody recognize this error, or does anybody know how to solve this?

Hmmm, not sure. As soon as I installed 10.3, I did an update using the repo: http://software.opensuse.org/download/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_10.3 I'm running KDE 3.5.8 release 33.1 I followed your steps and the login panelled showed up ok. Perhaps add that repo and do an update? A word of advice though, do not use yast. Instead, use Yast only to install "The Smart Package Manager". Then add that repo to "The Smart Package Manager". I say this not because I don't like Yast, but Yast installs each RPM after they are downloaded. If you loose your internet connection or the repo server goes down, you could be left with an unstable system. Instead, what "The Smart Package Manager" does is it downloads _all_ the RPMs first. Then, it installs them. That way if the internet connection goes down or the server goes down, at least your system will not become unstable. Instead, it will resume from where it had left off. -- Chris |
