Hi All,

Making some modest recordings at home with Sonar 5

Vocals through a VTB-1 Pre-Amp.
Guitar and Bass through a Digitech GNX-3.
Drums are midi or sometimes audio loops.
Keys or Horns are midi sequences.

All outputed to an Echo Mia Midi. (works great)

Here's my question. Are there any advantages to adding a keyboard to my
current setup. Everytime I see pics of a home setup, they all seem to have
a keyboard. I realize these people are probably players but I wonder what
could I use if for? Programming Drums? Automating tasks?

Some people say they would be lost without one but I'm having a hard time
figuring out what I'd use one for.

Thanks,
Roweshe

I'm a guitarist ... been playing guitar since 1965 or there abouts.
I can barely play keyboards but it's the only thing I record anymore.
Everything I do is midi.

Reasons:
No struggle getting a sound. No tuning problems.
Massive selection of sounds to choose from.
Far far greater creative options and possibilities.
Much easier to mix.

I could go on and on.
Best creative musical investment I ever made was my Yamaha S90.

Best move I ever made for studio gear ... selling my boat anchor 8 track 1/2" tape desk
and getting a computer. :-)

A keyboard can be very useful for programming drums. It will give a
more natural sound with different velocities rather than all at the same
level. For this purpose, the cheapest controller you can find will
work; something like the M-Audio eKeys 37 three octave keyboard would be
plenty sufficient. They run around $50.

Guitar player zillion years, but love my midi controller 25 keys touch
sensitive. I record( sequence) bass lines and drums. Some piano and strings
at a slooooow tempo. Couldn't live without it. Sonar 5 Producer,Evolution

Thanks guys. Great suggestions. I always figured the keyboard (even if I
didn't know how to play it) would
serve as a great composing / recording tool.

Thanks again.

Love the track Glennbo. I see what you mean with the Leslie.
