From: Jim on 5 May 2008 07:14 Just took delivery of a Brother HL-2170W monochrome laser printer. Curious as to whether or not it should be left on 24/7. A Google search was inconclusive since many of the postings were either very dated or got off topic. Discounting electrical consumption is it better or worse for the printer to be left on 24/7 as opposed to shutting it down each day after use. As a footnote the old HP inkjet it replaced was on 24/7 and outlast two computers.

We've got a Samsung laser printer that was several years old before we moved several years ago. :) -Dave

I'm still relying on an HP 5L I bought in Nov. 1995. It doesn't have a manual on/off switch, but is switched on electronically immediately when I send something to it to be printed. It switches itself off again after about 15 minutes of idle time. It's my main printer and still works like a charm. Larc - Change planet to earth to reply by email -

Dunno the specifics of that printer, but if it is Energy Star certified, it should use minimal power in standby. I had an Epson that lasted about 8 years and now a Panasonic that's 5 years old and still going strong. Both were left on 24/7.

It's on 24/7, used every day and is still on its original toner cartridge. The electronics take only minimal power unless it's actually printing. -- Robin (BrE) Herts, England
