I have a friend with the above motherboard with the lan icon showing a
network cable unplugged. The cat5 does work on a laptop. I have
reinstalled drivers and it shows hardware found and working ok but
still shows the cable unplugged.

I would appreciate any ideas as to what to check out before replacing
motherboard.

I have emailed Asus but no answer as of yet.

Thanks.

If you click Start>Settings>Network Connections, what does it say for
status under the Local Area Connection? If it says disabled, right
click it and select Enable. Hopefully it's an easy fix and don't toss
the Mobo. If anything put a PCI NIC card in it. They're way less
expensive than a new board.

Thanks for your reply. The settings are enabled. I know a lan card
will work but this will not tell me if there is a problem with the
motherboard lan. The board is only 6 months old and should be under
warranty if Asus responds to an email and there is no fix.

I just wanted to make sure there was no quick fix or setting I am
overlooking.

Thanks again.

Jim,

Yesterday, I had exactly that problem on an onboard intel 10/100
port, running XPpro. I tried different cables and known-working
router ports. What was weird was that I could see network data
on the NIC LEDs, but XP still reported cable disconnected.
In the end I installed a 3c509 PCI NIC, intending to disable the
onboard one. After confirming the 3c509 was working OK, I tried
the onboard port one more time, and.. it worked!
Removed the 3com, rebooted and onboard still worked.
All I can guess is that it's possible for XP to get its "knickers in
a twist" wrt the cable sensing, and installing a 2nd NIC fixed
whatever the problem was.

Thanks for the info. I will do just that and see if I have the same
luck. I need to get inside the box anyway to get the serial and
version numbers to email Asus.
