MSWord 2004 v11.5 is working fine in every other respect...

But we cannot get it to spell check. When you go to Tools/Spelling and
Grammer, it tells us that it has completed the spell check. But it
doesn't.
We have ticked "check spelling as you type" and "make suggestions" in
the preferences.
"Custom dictionary" is set to Custom Dictionary.

Any ideas anyone ?

Spell checking in Word is a complex beast.
Each style you use can have its own language or even no language.
No match, no check.

Heh, that's a nice way of saying that it's a complete mess. I've had
some lovely collaborative documents where half of it spell checks using
English and half with that bizarre language they use over the pond.

It could be easier to set up out of the box, but much of the complexity
is valuable to experienced authors working in more than one language.

Personally, I was never much bothered, because I can spell OK and I
knew how to set and use styles. Any old variant of English is OK for
catching typos. Spell checks are nice to have, but nothing beats a
careful read through. So they don't really save you much time.

Word's grammar check is awful. It is stifling. But then I don't think
any automated grammar checker is worth bothering considering.
