Next: Apple Remote and Front Row?
From: Dudley Henriques on 25 Jun 2008 07:04 Macbook Pro; Leopard. Mail application version 3.3 (924) The dock icon for mail that I have dragged into the dock has come up missing from the dock on two occasions about a month apart. Reboot won't restore the icon. The program however is fine and remains in applications. I have to open apps and drag a new icon to the dock and this remains there untill the next time it comes up missing. Anyone know what might be causing this issue or if it's a known issue, or even more importantly how to fix it? Thanks much. -- Dudley Henriques

Forgot to mention that when this happens, the system has been in sleep mode overnight. The icon is missing the next morning when the system is awakened from sleep mode. -- Dudley Henriques

In all seriousness, the most likely explanation is that you (or another user if there is one) just dragged it out of the Dock by mistake. In nearly 8 years of daily use of OS X with my machines almost always asleep (as opposed to shut down) when not in use I've never seen the Dock spontaneously lose an icon. -- "Harry?" The puff of smoke if nothing else should have alerted me to that :-) I'm fairly certain it's something else as it's happened twice several weeks apart and always with the same mail icon. I'll call Apple Care and see if it's a known issue and if not I'll be especially watchful for how I handle the icon to see if it duplicates the issue. It had occurred to me that I do quit the program sometimes before I sleep the system and I might have right clicked "remove from dock" by mistake, but that selection is 4 about the right click/quit at the bottom and I'd again be surprised to find I had accidentally done that. -- Dudley Henriques

I'm pretty sure if you drag an application icon off the Dock *while the application is still running*, rather than seeing a puff of smoke, the Dock will wait until you *quit* said application, and then remove the icon from the Dock. So perhaps you accidentally dragged the icon off the Dock while the application was still running, and then later on, when you quit the application, the Dock removed the icon. -- Please send all responses to the relevant news group rather than directly to me, as E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my very hungry SPAM filter.
