MEETING

23 July 2010, 7:30 am

Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC)
8301 Greensboro Drive
McLean VA

Southern Corner of Westpark Drive and Greensboro Drive

Agenda

1. Prepared Talks

"Counter Missile Design" by Mel Friedman

ABSTRACT. A blue missile has fuel for T time units. It's fired when a red
missile is closest and when T > tau (time to intercept). The blue missile
always points toward the red (which travels in a straight line at constant
altitude--assume a flat earth). I present an algorithm to determine when to
fire the blue missile.

"Dynamic Presentation of Geographic Data" by Dan Martinez

ABSTRACT. Dan's Mathematica notebooks for this talk dynamically
superimpose graphic objects onto topographic maps, which are shown as
background images. Moving a slider enables users to display date-sensitive
(using Boole and Pick) interactive graphic objects (using Tooltip and
PopupWindow) in a LocatorPane. The application's data base structure and
supporting functions are designed to facilitate many categories of
spatial-temporal data. Three examples will be presented: Selected General
Actions in the Napoleonic Wars, birthplaces and life-durations of US
Presidents, and a hypothetical outbreak of communicable disease in the
Continental US.

2. Mathematica Gems and Discoveries

Sharing of Mathematica programming oddities
Applications of Mathematica to some areas of science
Something recently read and worth sharing

3. Mathematica Questions, Possible Approaches and Discussion

4. New Business

Discuss new way to publish agenda
Select next meeting presentation, time and place
