A better place to ask your question is the alt, engineering .electrical
news group. A power systems career covers a lot of territory. If you
were mainly doing things like electrical safety or installation work
then you may never need Matlab. But if you were to work at a company
where there was a need to model and simulate electrical power systems
then a good working knowledge of Matlab and Simulink is a high
priority. See: http://www.mathworks.com/products/simpower/ for some
examples of the types of power systems problems Matlab and Simulink
are used on.
