From: Praseen Preman on 21 Jun 2008 11:00 Hi guys, I am an ardent fan of Debian after I saw it running on one of my friends machines. I have been trying to install it for a few months but without success . I am a newbie as far as Debian is concerned. I have worked on Fedora Linux but it seems Debian is harder to tame hence all the more fun. Here are the tech details. My Machine configuration is given below Intel Pentium Dual Core CPU 2.80 GHz 256 MB RAM Seagate 40GB hard disk Intel original Chipset motherboard NVIDIA GeForce 6200 TurboCache(TM) ST380211AS SATA hard disk (seagate) SAMSUNG 52X CD RW+DVD drive I wrote 3 CD iso images of the Debian 4.0r3 into 3 CDs and tried to install on my system, the following are the system logs. ata1: SATA link up 1.5Gbps (Status 113 Scontrol) ata1.00:qc timeout (cmd 0xef) ata1.00:failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x4) hdb:SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SM-352F,ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM DRIVE ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq14 hdb:lost interrupt hdb:ATAPI 52 X DVD-ROM........ I choose Debian linux in GRUB during startup. Please let me know what the problem, as it has been bugging me for quite a while :-( Regards, Praseen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-REQUEST(a)lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Might be due to your hardware (motherboard) being too new to work correctly with the linux kernel (2.6.18) that ships with Debian Etch. Try using an installer for Debian Testing (Lenny) or Debian Unstable (Sid) instead. David. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-REQUEST(a)lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Looks like the kernel can't see the hard drives. I had a similar issue with a DG33BU motherboard, the G33 chipset apparently has some new bells and whistles. My workaround was to go into the BIOS and set the hard-drive access mode to "ide" (might be called "legacy"), and then boot with the "pci=nommconf" kernel option. This isn't really a Debian-specific problem, it's due to the devices being newer than the kernel support. -- A. -- Andrew Reid / reidac(a)bellatlantic.net -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-REQUEST(a)lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". As others have written, your chipset/disk i/o hardware is likely not perfectly understood by the kernel drivers, and a workaround may be a more recent kernel or installer, a BIOS tweak, and/or some kernel parameters at boot time. What concerns me is you say you burned 3 CD iso's. Do you actually have the first three CD iso's, or are they actually the DVD iso's? This may be a dumb question, but since Etch is a three DVD set, I wondered. If you tried writing DVD-sized iso's to CDs, a lot of things wouldn't fit, obviously. Etch (Debian 4.0) is a bit dated, now, you might want to get the testing distribution, code-named lenny, instead, which is quite usable. It may be better able to handle your hardware during install. It has a more recent kernel, and more recent versions of everything, else, too. The whole shebang requires five DVDs, or sometimes four DVDs and a CD, but you only need the first DVD to install lenny. It makes some people cranky. However, Star has a very good suggestion. If you have a recent CPU, you may want AMD64. Don't let the name throw you, it is also for 64-bit Intel x86 CPUs as well. (Don't go for the IA64 distribution; that is for the Itanium, not x86_64. A lot of people make that mistake.)
