From: Ian Bell on 14 Jan 2007 15:00 I am trying to clean my daughter's virus ridden Windows XP laptop. It is from 2001 and I don't think it even has update 1 applied. I downloaded avg antivirus which found about 300 infected files and cleaned them up. Howver there is something more pernicious in there that has corrupted Internet Explorer (5). In short I cannot upgrade XP without first upgrading IE because MS won't let any other browser but IE download XP updates. I tried downloading/installing IE6 but this virus is still there. You cannot edit favourites and even setting the opening page to balnk does not stop a load of popups appearing when IE is opened. I had already downloaded SeaMonkey and this works fine so I thought, right, just delete the IE folder, download and install IE6. However, as administrator I cannot delete the IE folder or any file in it. So thought, run a Linux live distro and do it that way. That does not work either. I can read/write hda1 the small 50Mbyte partition as VFAT but the main partition hda2 I can only read. I have tried with Knoppix 5.something and Puppy Linux with the same result. Can't even change permissions as root let alone write. I suspect this is an NTFS partition so what I need is a live distro with NTFS write - any suggestions? Cheers ian

I think I have 5.1 on a DVD somewhere - trouble is this laptop is so old it only has a CD drive. Thanks for the tip. Ian
