Not so indicated at your URL. The title of the article is pretty clear.
"Using NVIDIA Linux graphics drivers with Linux 2.6.25-rc*" and no mention
is made of the release kernel.

Perhaps the requirement for the release kernel is posted somewhere else?

Perhaps you care to compare article date and kernel release date.
Anyway, installation of NVIDIA binary 169.12 on slack-curent fails
w/o the patch.
