From: HandyGeek on 16 Mar 2005 11:26 I've heard, in a public forum, a new FLV codec will be released soon. I have seen no other information about it. Is there any info to be had? I'd like some more details if they exist. All I know so far is that it will supposedly rival Windows Media for quality and will support live alpha channels. That's great news if it's true. I'd like to know more though. I'm wondering: 1 - if there is a data rate sweet spot. 2 - if new metadata tags are being introduced. (God I hope so) 3 - if a new Comm server will be required or if it will just be updated to support the new features. 4 - anything else important. Jeff

I'm not sure what all you've heard or where, but the mention of alpha channels makes me think you're talking about the next version of Flash (code named 8Ball for the IDE and Maelstrom). See notes here: http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/logged_in/wanbar_maelstrom.html David stiller (at) quip (dot) net "Luck is the residue of good design."
From: HandyGeek on 16 Mar 2005 14:43 Ah, there you go. Thanks for the link. In that page, the new video codec is mentioned at the top of the list. "Video: We plan to include an exceptional, new video codec that's comparable to some of the best codecs on the market today. This new codec allows you to deliver exceptional video quality at reasonable broadband rates and at larger sizes. We also plan to support a real-time transparent alpha channel that will enable live composition of non-rectangular video, allowing for the layering of video with text, graphics, and even other video.
