However, please realize that it will be hard for any individual to
tinker with a modern system such as the HP50g, modern manufacturing
techniques and components are just not designed for home hobbyist and
do not let themselves to be worked on in a garage (for example, the
sub 1mm pitch of the connector makes soldering extremely hard for
someone who is not a trained electrical engineer).

I looked at the picture of the connector at the electronic parts store
in the previous reference and it looks like the mini USB port on the
calculator. The connector for the RS232 is rectangular and has a slot
in the top right hand corner, when looking at it with the calculator
face up, so that the plug can only go in one way.

But what are the signal levels on the RX and TX lines? Are they
0V/+3.3V, as I believe they are at the 48gII's port, or are they
more like the 48 series, or even in compliance with EIA-232?

Perhaps the 6V line might be intended as a possible power source
for an external level-shifter?

And which pin is which?

Yes, I realize that I could purchase a 50g and use an oscilloscope
to find answers to some of these questions, but it seems to me
that they shouldn't even have to be asked.

Well, the "mini-B" end *looks* as if it would fit, but the other
end is a USB type A connector! Surely we'd want a DB9 or DB25
connector there; I don't expect that any (more or less) RS-232
port would work well connected to a USB host!

That seems like an excellent reason for HP to make the proper
cable available, if not supplied with the calculator, then at
least as an optional accessory.
