Firewire: yes, although 1 GB is probably a little too tight. My
"rescue" partition (cloned to the iPod) is 2 GB and it's more than half
full.

Of course, Apple in their "wisdom" (read: cheapness) don't bother
shipping iPods with FireWire cables, just USB.

I've got three iPods (an original, a 3rd gen, and a Photo) and they all
came with FireWire cables. The only ones that don't come with FireWire
cables are the shuffles and the nanos.

The current fourth generation white iPods don't come with FireWire
cables anymore, just USB. You can still connect them via FireWire if you
have the cable though.

Sorry, I should have said "don't bother ANY MORE shipping iPods with
FireWire cable". :-)
