Hi Steve,

I found a receipt from last year that is a faint carbonless copy. Even the
pre-printed portions of the form are light (light green ink on yellow
carbonless copy paper). The original is not the easiest to read. It was
handled a lot and is a bit rough to boot...

I scanned it to Neat Receipts with the general settings - no adjustment as
to brightness etc. just a straight scan. It is more 'readable' than the
original because of the B&W contrast. (I think there is an option to choose
color, I'll have to go look for that.)

I exported the image as uncompressed TIF which is huge (25mb) but it was
very readable onscreen and printed. I compressed the TIF which brought it
down to 1.5mb and no loss of quality. Next I cut the size to 25% of
original. It is now about 250kb and it did lose a fair bit of quality. But
it is still readable. I posted it here:
http://appyface.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/carbonless_copy_scan.tif

NR certainly didn't do any worse with it than my PhotoSmart or my flatbed
scanner. And NR's OCR found the dollar amounts too.

I did spend some time this weekend writing a script to relocate the
databases to another drive/path (it uses SQL 2005 MSDE for the engine). The
program gave no install options but put everything including databases into
'program files'. I keep the OS and program files partition small for
imaging so I didn't want them there. The app appears to be happy after the
move and so far is functioning normally. But I've only scratched the
surface if it's abilities.

The basic workings, at least the ones I've used so far, seem to be well
thought out. I've already 'goofed' and looked for a way out without having
to re-scan, and the features I needed are there. As example, I scanned two
pages separately when they should have been one multi-page document. There
is an option to combine them after the scan. Then I realized I combined
them in reverse order :-) and there is an option to change the order of the
scans.

FWIW...

Hi Sue
Thanks for the detailed followup ..
the scan you posted looks great to me :) . I get a few carbonless
reciepts from some of the vendors around here so this looks great for me.

ok when you say you wrote a script to move the file data storage to
somewhere else .. was it really necessary or is there something in the
settings that can change that . .
if not .. would you share with me how you did it .. don't do anything
more for me yet as i don't have the thing. but when i get it (if..
probably) i would want to keep the files on my server which has RAID and
a back up drive. I'm also using Ghost 14.

thanks Sue !
you're a tremendous ! help

Hi Steve,

Glad I can help.

The NR installer doesn't give any options, just puts the NR application to
\program files\neatreceipts, and installs the MS SQL 2005 MSDE (Microsoft
SQL desktop engine) to \program files\microsoft sql server\mssql\(...)

Nothing wrong with that except \program files\ is on my OS drive, which only
has the OS, installed apps, registry, etc. Things I can't move or could be
problematic if moved. I keep this partition very small so images are small
and quick. I keep all my data on separate physical drives unless I just
can't relocate it.

I have written to the NR vendor to tell them I moved the databases to
another drive, I'm not experiencing any problems with NR, but would they
please clue me if there's something I need to know. I haven't heard back
yet but I just sent the email this morning.

NR does have its own backup and restore commands from within NR and the
backup can be automated. It works fine with the databases in their new
location. I also use SQL backup just for added insurance (I'm paranoid and
keep multiple copies in different formats, of anything I can't afford to
lose. This app will become one of those.) It appears the application is
not dependent on their install parameters for the SQL databases, which is
the right way to do it.

I'd be happy to share my 'move databases' script if you decide to buy the
program. They're just standard SQL 2005 SQLCMD command-line scripts. I
have already tested uninstalling the app and wiping the disk and registry
clean, then installing to default location and restoring from backup (both
NR's and SQL native). I've also tested wiping clean, installing to default
location, moving the databases, THEN restoring, and that works fine too. I
feel safe enough at this point, to rely on the proggie now.

Just an update for you Steve (and anyone else who may be interested). I
still haven't exercised all functions in the NR application yet, but so far
no glitches.

I did write NR tech support and told them I relocated the databases (and
why). I got a reply that NR will not work that way, the databases must be
on the OS partition. I wrote back and asked for details on what issues I
can expect to run into, because so far the app appears to be working? Got a
reply that said the SP1 release (which is what I'm using) could have the
executables on another drive/partition but the databases still had to be on
the OS partition. I again wrote back that the databases are on a different
physical drive from the OS and so far everything appears to be working, so
please give detailed scenarios that won't work, so I can check it out? No
answer back so far. It is looking like they probably don't know...

I'm sorry to see this kind of tech support, I wish the company was more
robust in that area... {sigh}

thanks for the info :)
