From: William M. Klein on 10 Jan 2008 17:17 There are certainly days (weeks?) when I think that Pete's forecast for COBOL must be true. Just look at how active CLC would be if we only talked about "on-topic" topics. (I guess that the general issue of "OO" vs "Procedural" is on topic, but so little else in this newsgroup is). As usual, I know that this is an unmoderated group and that "we" can talk about whatever anyone wants. However, (to me) it is almost more productive to argue paragraphs and sections that it is to "debate" maters of religion, God, first causes, global warming, etc. Oh well, I just thought I would "rant" a bit - and/or mourn the loss of interest in COBOL topics within a COBOL newsgroup. -- Bill Klein wmklein <at> ix.netcom.com

As you know, I feel that the value of this newsgroup is largely in the fact that it IS unmoderated. (Where else can you get a bunch of intelligent, informed people, saying what they think, whether it is on topic or not, without fear of censorship? Given that it is unmoderated, for the most part, behaviour here is pretty good.) However, that is tiresome for people who ONLY want to discuss COBOL. (You are probably feeling very much the way I feel about long threads here on US politics. However, I recognise that this is topical for many people at the moment and, at the end of the day we don't HAVE to read everything here. I skip the threads I have no interest in.) Perhaps other moderated groups would be more to your taste? It would be sad to see you leave this group, but you don't have to make a mutually exclusive choice; maybe spend some more time in the moderated COBOL newsgroups as well as here? This forum reflects the times. Interest in COBOL is declining, although it is far from dead, yet :-) I no longer have the time or inclination to read all of the OT posts, so I have addressed this by monitoring posts fom certain individuals. It isn't perfect but it seems to work. :-) Pete. -- "I used to write COBOL...now I can do anything." > -- > Bill Klein > wmklein <at> ix.netcom.com >

I was musing about something similar recently, Mr Klein, and wondering if the medium might have something to do with it. I'm a member of a listserv for alumni of my Alma Mater and I've noticed that while the college keeps turning out graduates - and the existence of the listserv is included as part of the school's 'Keep in Touch with Graduates' stuff - there have not been new members for a goodly while. I prefer more pragmatic discussions. conp.lang.java.programer has a useless thread that has gone on since last August 2006 It is just the nature of unmmoderated newsgroups.
