I am replacing my imac soon. And I was wondering if I could hook up the
ipod to both computers. The ipod I have now is registered in my name.
But I wasn't sure if I could use the ipod with a new computer and new
itunes playlist simultaneously.

Out of the box, you cannot. There may be (probably are) hacks out
there, but the way it is meant to be, you associate an iPod with one
iTunes library on one computer at a time.

Depending on what you want, you can disable the "library sync" and
manages the songs on your ipod manually. (i.e. by drag'n'drop the songs
y ou want). For myself.. I use my Ipod with only one iTune and I pefer
this way.

Yes, if you sync it manually (except for the iPod Shuffle.) I use my
iPods on four Macs.

Do you then sync it only with selected playlists?
