From: Alasdair on 17 Apr 2008 13:32 I see from my latest bill that Orange now charge me extra for not paying my bill by DD. Are there any phone providers left who allow me to pay by good old fashioned money without punishing me? I am quite happy to pay by Internet transfer, by credit/debit card or by cheque but I am not prepared to allow any company to dip into my bank account and help themselves when they want to. -- Alasdair.

No, no, you've got it all wrong, you get a *discount* if you *do* pay by DD..! Seriously, I've never had a problem with DD, you do get notification in advance how much will be taken and you can stop it if you want to, so I've never understood the objection to DD as such. I do understand that you don't want to pay by that method however, and I agree with you that you should be able to pay however you want without penalty, but the objection to DD as a method of payment per se has always eluded me. The method of payment I *do* object to though is premium rate phone calls, but that's another topic..! Ivor

My problems are (1) I do not have a large income and keep as little as possible on current account and (2) I am not very well organised. I do not keep a budget and if I have to pay out a largeish sum of money, I check online to see what my balance is before I press the "Pay" button. With DD, I have to remember when monies are due to be taken and if I forget, the conseuences can be very expensive if it pushes me into unauthorised overdraft. I can see why the creditor companies like it. It transfer the onus of remembering to the customer and this customer doesn't like it. -- Alasdair.
