From: (PeteCresswell) on 6 Jan 2008 12:23 Been getting roughly the same set of weirdnesses maybe once every few days over the past two months. Restored my system from a old, known-good backup day before yesterday, and the problem just resurfaced today.... so I'm thinking that Windows XP Pro is off the hook unless it's some artifact of a system update. The symptoms are: ------------------------------------------------------------ - Task bar goes black - Able to open individual drives after clicking MyComputer, but folders within a drive cannot be opened. - Able to bring up TaskMan once, but not a second time - Firefox (already running when the problem surfaced) able to start opening a new link, but never finishes - The system "go-away" buttons (the little "X" in the top right corner of most windows) winks when clicked, but the window never closes. - If left alone, the system doesn't seem to "get over it". Twice I've left it in that state overnite, with no effect. - In the end I have to force a re-boot by powering off/on. ------------------------------------------------------------ If not the MB, I'm thinking maybe one of the two USB cards I have - since the system's normal operation seems to be to hang when some media (like an iPod) are connected to a USB port - until the medium is opened and fully recognized. Does this sound familiar to anybody? -- PeteCresswell

Checked the PSU and all of its connections, including reseating them? Reseat all peripheral cards, RAM, data cables, etc.
