An alternative solution, is to install a PCI USB2 card and see if the symptoms remain. This PC with the external USB drives worked fine for a few years. Now there's a problem with the external drives and it started at the exact time the -5v power supply went away. If getting another power supply that has -5v will fix this problem I'll do it. If that's not the cause then I'd like to know what is. (I have no other suspects than the power supply.)
