From: vjp2.at on 27 Apr 2008 23:13 I got a used Pocket PC 2002 celfon (Siemens SX56 / HTC Wallaby). What are the issues in predicting if a DOS or Windows app will also work on this machine? I'm hoping for PDF reader, emacs, matlab, old DOS 3.0 apps, OpenOffice, PortableApps. - = - Vasos Panagiotopoulos, Columbia'81+, Reagan, Mozart, Pindus, BioStrategist http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/vjp2/vasos.htm ---{Nothing herein constitutes advice. The applications you mention are typically designed for X86 based desktop PCs and won't work on a Windows Mobile based PDA. In most cases someone will need to have produced a special version (a port) of the application you desire to run in the Windows CE / Windows Mobile environment. In some cases (matlab etc) you are probably out of luck, however a couple of open source equivalent packages may have been ported at some stage. Atleast one version of emacs is available at http://www.rainer-keuchel.de/wince/emacs-wince.html for example. Generally you can't take an application designed for your desktop PC and have it work on a Pocket PC 2002 device. You need to find software specially written for your PDA. Hope this helps, Christopher Fairbairn
From: Gary Mount on 28 Apr 2008 04:36 An app is compiled to a specific platform and processor type. The pocket pc has an incompatible processor with programs that are DOS or Windows applications. In other words they are binary incompatible. This is similar to a 64 bit program being unable to run on a 32 bit operating system. It is possible to emulate a processor so it will run on a pocket pc, but the application would typically run too slowly for it to be usable, whereas the opposite is done on the desktop to emulate devices. The emulators that run on the desktop are provided by Microsoft with their Visual Studio Pro products and are used to help develop pocket/mobile applications without having to actually have a device. <vjp2.at(a)at.BioStrategist.dot.dot.com> wrote in message news:fv3fd0$6aj$1(a)reader2.panix.com... > I got a used Pocket PC 2002 celfon (Siemens SX56 / HTC Wallaby). > > What are the issues in predicting if a DOS or Windows app will also > work on this machine? From: "Werner "Menneisyys" Ruotsalainen [MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices]" on 28 Apr 2008 08:46 Well, you can still run MS-DOS apps under PocketDOS and, if you upgrade to WM2003+, under various DosBox ports. See my MS-DOS Emulation Bible at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1969&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 Alternatively, if you have the bandwidth and a 24/7 server / desktop to log into, you can use remote desktops to run apps - see my Remote Desktop Control Bible at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1571&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 . -- -- Werner "Menneisyys" Ruotsalainen - Microsoft MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices Please see the Pocket PC Mag Expert Blog (including mine) at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/ - you will definitely like it. From: vjp2.at on 15 May 2008 02:12 Ok, I was trying to put XP apps in the SD card (via USB) and run them without going through activesync. Will any MS-DOS generic (no bit map) apps run on pocket CMD (DOS)? I got ev41, adobe, freecell, backgammon to work. Chess wants dot net. LME (MAtLab clone) says some component is missing (I installed via cab). I also tried several MIDI programs (GS, MI, PocketAMP) and they all fail. There is a program called xdaunlock which asks for an unlock code. (Siemens SX56 XDA 1.2 was T-mobile and I use ATT - it is really an HTC Wallaby). There are a lot of redundant programs which came with the machine. I might prefer to move them to the XP if I don't lose the ability to run them later. I'm reluctant because this doesn't behave like regular windows. - = - Vasos Panagiotopoulos, Columbia'81+, Reagan, Mozart, Pindus, BioStrategist http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/vjp2/vasos.htm ---{Nothing herein constitutes advice.
