I remember seeing a mention on some website a year ago or so where a
C64 music program could use a PS/2 mouse on the userport.

Well, about 2 years ago I had tried for weeks to get a PS/2 keyboard to
work on the userport and failed. But now I've decided that I'd like a
mouse on my C=DTV and so I'm considering trying again. I believe the
protocol is more or less the same for the PS/2 mouse as it is for the
keyboard, right?

What I was hoping is that there is some 6502 code already in existence
somewhere which might save me some trouble.

I don't have any 6502 code, but you can use the PSXJoy Atmel code to
whip up a PS/2 mouse to c64 mouse adapter, if you want. It's on a long
list of stuff to do, it just needs a little coding.

Well, that still wouldn't help me attach a mouse to the Hummer/DTV. So
I really want to be able to talk to the PS/2 device directly. Every
indication is that I should be able to pull this off. However, I may
be delayed getting started because my PS/2 port from mouser has been
backordered. I don't have a spare port at the moment and don't want
to chop up my mouse cable.

No 6502 code, but the reference manual at the link below has some info
about the logic

There is an adaptor called "micromys" (ps/2 mouse adaptor for C64) ..
made by Protovision (IIRC) .. but I think its there is no stock of it...
