In Norton Ghost v8.3 through v11.00, or Partition Magic Pro 8.05 (CD
versions booted into PC DOS), my PS/2 mouse will never work. The
cursor is there, but locked. In pure DOS, with something like
Edit.com and a mouse driver installed - no problem. But from within
Ghost or Partition Magic running on PC DOS, nada. I have to use the
keyboard, and while workable, it's less convenient than the mouse.
What could possibly be causing this? I have motherboard BIOS 1805,
the latest. It's a relatively minor issue but annoying.

press f5 when "Starting PC DOS..." appears and you will get an A:\>
prompt. Run mouse.com - what's the output? Is the mouse found?

Try another mouse.

I tried 2 different PS/2 mice. No joy. I can load a standard mouse
driver fine, have it detect the mouse and it'll be working
effectively, but it's when the Norton Ghost interface under PC-DOS
first appears that the mouse will freeze. It works for about 2
seconds before locking up, however. Same with Partition Magic. I'm
thinking it's a quirk with my IDE configuration (still using 3 IDE
HDDs & one optical drive on the A8N-SLI IDE controllers, no SATA) and
one the disks are accessed & checked through these PC DOS Disk cloning
or partitioning programs, it causes a lock up.

Try disconnecting all hard-drives except your boot one and see if the
mouse problem still shows up. Also use the OS disk-check program to
verify that your boot partition (C:) has no errors.

I did this. No dice. Even disconnected by IDE boot drive and all USB
devices and STILL my PS/2 mouse will freeze just after the Norton
Ghost splash screen appears in PC DOS. I'm thinking there's some
conflict in BIOS now, some IRQ out of order. I tried an old serial
port TouchPad (which I hate) plugged into Com1 which works fine with
Ghost with a standard mouse driver. I'm tired of chasing my tail over
this. It's not a crucial issue, but is damn irksome that my PS/2
mouse will NOT work with Norton Ghost or Partition Magic under PC DOS.
We all want our systems to run perfect but I think I've been obsessive
enough about this. Maybe it's just a bad PS/2 port?

Thanks for the all the help here. Over & out.
