An iBook takes up less room than a Playstation + TV, and is more
portable.

But my experience with PCSX - the only Playstation emulator I can find -
is sub-par. It won't load Wipeout 3 at all, and in Gran Turismo 2 I can
fly!

Is it worth persevering (eg downloading a BIOS as requested by PCSX, or
looking for other emulators) or should I use this as an excuse to save
up for a PSP instead?

If you can run OS9 then if you speak to the right people, it's possible
to get hold of a copy of Virtual Gamestation, which is very good.

PSP's are cheap enough, and they have WiFi, and can be used for
music/photos/movies and even as a WWW broser in a pinch. The games are
expensive though, and unless you have youthful eyesight then
fast/detailed games can be a little tough on the small screen.
Supposedly you'll be able to use a PSP as a wireless copntroller with
the PS3 when it comes out in late 2006/early 2007 too.

PCSX is rather limited compatibility wise as you have seen, but it's
currently the best of the bunch if your run OS X. Virtual Gamestation
was great but never got updated to work in OS X sadly. I wouldn't bother
with a PSP at the moment as most of the games are shite, but you can get
a PSOne and a clip on mini TFT screen for very little money at the
moment.

Now *that's* subjective.

I play games maybe once every couple of months. So I'd really rather
spend zero...

Having said that, I suspect I'd play a bit more if I had something
portable. Tethered is so.... boring.

I usually wait until games consoles are outdated before buying, that way
you get the second-hand games. When is PSP2 due out?

That should be OK.

PS3? Meh. :)
