I was wondering if there are any schematics out there, or if it is
even possible to duplicate something like an Lt. Kernel nowadays? I'd
really like to have a hard drive for my C64C, but my wife would flat
out kill me if I spent $800 on a hard drive for the Commodore. Plus, I
have heard that it is nearly impossible to find an Lt. Kernel and CMDs
are rare.

You might want to investigate some of the product's and programs
available to use an old PC as a file server for the C64. Many of those
kind of things have been around for years, and have all the "bugs"
worked out now and work flawlessly.

Your wife will love you , if you use that old 486, holding up the
coffee table for something useful, and spend the money you would have
spent on a CMD ( you would never recieve from Maurice ) -- and get a
new coffee table for her.

The work being done to interface the USB Flash drive is even more
exciting... nice and compact ( and light weight ) and take up little
desktop space.

I've owned two CMD HD's and a Lt. Kernal hard drive during this past
year, so neither are IMPOSSIBLE to find. It's true that they're not
plentiful, but they are still out there. I got the Lt. Kernal in
trade for one of the CMD HD's. Unfortunately, due to the value of
these drives and being short on cash twoard the end of last year, I
was forced to sell the other CMD HD and the Lt. Kernal. However, I do
hope to be able to get another one again at some point in time.

Of all the hard drives for Commodores, the ones I'd say are
practically IMPOSSIBLE to find are the ICT Data Chief and the original
Commodore 9060 and 9090 hard drives. At least I haven't been able to
find any of these (yet).

First off, I think 64HDD may be a good first option. SD2IEC or MMC2IEC
can also be considered a Hard Drive. Ultimate 1541 will no doubt grow
to incldue a std HD based operation, as everything else is there.

There is also the X-IDE work, which aims to interface an IDE drive to a
1541 using a daughterboard.
