This program claims Photoshop's invert feature isn't appropriate for
negatives at all. I don't know enough to critique the reasoning
behind it:

I'd recommend running tests. I personally use Vuescan to invert and
then do color correction in Photoshop. I'm happy with the results and
find them more consistent than ColorNeg.
