I don't think Windows can recompile the kernel unless you reinstall. It
is now a different computer - reinstall and build Windows from the
ground up.

A "repair install" might work. I've not tried it for this purpose,

I went from a 4000+ to an X2 4200+ dual core ( and then back ) with no issues other than I didn't see the 4200 as being
stronger than the 4000. That's why I switched back to the 4000.

I suspect your mother board might be the issue or a bios update.
Make sure your MB can run an X2 4200+
