From: Lori-Wheaten on 29 Apr 2008 11:20 Windows XP Pro, SP2; MS Office 2003 SP3 with mixed environment of either Project 2003 Professional or Project 2003 Standard. I've just been informed of this issue and am new to Project; I have searched on various sites as well. We have a large dashboard/main project located on a shared drive with numerous links to other projects. Several team members can be updating their personal project affecting the main project at once. The problem is the data is saved correctly in both project locations, subproject and main project, but intermittently the main file data has incorrect dates and times. At the time of the project updates and save; the correct project time is calculated and displayed within both the subproject and main project. But, other times the date is way off on the main project. Based on my research, it looks like we need every client with Project Pro 2003 along with Project Server. This would allow for multiple individual and main project updates. Is this correct? The information I found doesn't exactly explain it clearly for me…. I think I need one for the Project newbie plus one….. Thanks in advance!!
From: Rod Gill on 29 Apr 2008 16:30 Yes Project Pro and Std can work with files on a saved drive, this is very common. Your problem is probably one caused by file corruption. If you have files liked in say a master project or resource pool, then if any sub-project is renamed, moved or over-written file corruption will occur sooner or later. There are ways around having linked files (Eg recorded macros to create new consolidated files with no links), but its about people, process and tools. Yes Project Server is a solution, but has its own overheads.
