True enough, but by that same logic I think everyone should
be aware of what they are in for if they decide to save $40.

10.4: Use MacFuse to read and write to NTFS volumes
By: jo7ker on Sat, Mar 3 '07 at 9:12AM PST
This is just fantastic! In fact it was even easier for me (didn't even
need to use the Terminal, let alone Xcode - only Safari and TextEdit!)
What I did:

(1) Downloaded the latest MacFUSE package (dmg from Google);
(2) Installed MacFUSE package and restarted the Mac;
(3) Downloaded the NTFS-3g package (dmg from Chucker's - lifehack link
is dead);
(4) Fixed the "macfuse_required" error (tip from InsanelyMac);
(5) Installed the NTFS-3g package (no restart);
(6) Plugged in my NTFS-formatted USB2 external drive (which wouldn't
even mount before) and it just appeared on my Macbook's desktop -
read-write!!!

AWESOME hint.

All I did was install MacFUSE and then install NTFS-3G with MacFUSE
Tools.

I went do the disk utility and unmounted then remounted the windows
drive and VOILA!! The only catch is the icon isn't a hard drive anymore
but a network drive... no biggie :)

Sheesh, if I had to go though all that just to save $40, I would
not figure it was worth the trouble.

I would probably have missed the tip:

"(4) Fixed the "macfuse_required" error (tip from InsanelyMac)"

....and nothing would have worked!

'course, I have no geek blood flowing through my veins, so YMMV.

It's basically downloading a couple DMG files and installing them. Big
deal. Even with the error fix, you're talking about 20-30 minutes of
work, tops. Plus it's free and open comared to closed and not free. If
something free and open breaks, finding a fix is usually as simple as
doing a Google search. In comparison, closed and not free requires you
contact the maker and play the waiting game. No thanks. To each his own,
of course, but if I can get something like this open source and free
over not free and closed, I'll take the free one, personally.

And what followed was available right there on the very page that JR
cited, right?

: ) Sorry for the brain fart, Dave. You're right, of course. I'll try
to pay more attention in the future, promise.
