Because not everyone is a geek and knows how to jump through
all the hoops necessary to get it to work by that method.

True, but I think everyone should be aware that this option is available
and decide for themselves whether it's worth the effort to save $40.

format of the external drives?? Am I missing something?

Thanks. So we know Time Machine can back up external HFS drives - but
whether it can back up mounted NTFS/FAT drives is questionable.
