From: Roy on 7 Apr 2008 18:36 Having only 3 usb port in my laptop and not enough for my USB devices, I purchased a USB Hub that has its own power supply. This USB hub having its own AC adapter therefore should be expected not to drain down the power of my laptop or can be as fast as the existing USB ports in my laptop. To my surprise whenever I connect an external flash drive or External hard drive it keep saying that: "This device can perform faster if you connect it to a high speed USB port." When I clicked to open the supposed high speed USB Port it says: "HIGH SPEED USB device is attached to a non high speed USB hub. The USB Mass storage device is a high speed USB mass storage device and will function at reduced speed into a non high speed USB port. The hubs shown in bold type have free ports that can support high speed USB devices Intel 82801FB/FBM USB2 Enhanced Host Controller 265C USB ROOT hub 8 ports For a list of available port Click here." Now I am quiet perplexed how come there are 8 High speed USB port when I count the actual USB ports as only 3! Where are the other 5 High speed USB Ports? Does this mean that this Self powered USB hub is useless for for High speed USB Port or is there a turn around of this device that I am not aware off and therefore, can still function normally as the existing laptop usb port? Please somebody enlighten me about this perplexity. TIA

You can suppress the message by a check box out of Device Manager, but that doesn't affect the reality of the situation. Is this an older machine that might well date from the USB 1.1 era? Art

Unfortunately, the wording of the USB2 spec allows less reputable suppliers to market these as USB2 compliant (suggesting to the unwary that they are high speed). > > Now I am quiet perplexed how come there are 8 High speed USB port when > I count the actual USB ports as only 3! Where are the other 5 High > speed USB Ports? It is more than likely that the chips on the motherboard have 8 USB ports on them, but the motherboard maker has only brought 3 of them out to physical ports on the outside of the casing. This is very common. I am not aware of any chip set that has less than 6 ports on it. > Does this mean that this Self powered USB hub is useless for for High > speed USB Port or is there a turn around of this device that I am > not aware off and therefore, can still function normally as the > existing laptop usb port? It sounds like this may be the case. Fortunately, HUBs are not expensive and I would suggest that you try to obtain one that specifically states that it supports high speed mode. The one that you have is perfectly adequate for connecting non high speed devices.

Strangely, that is rarely the case. It is usual to have unconnected ports on laptops (and sometimes on desktops). The one thing that will use a hidden USB2 port is an Express card slot.
